Getting started

  1. Install Mint Gift from the Shopify App Store. The app home shows a setup checklist.
  2. Add gift options to your cart: click Turn on the app embed on the app home. Your theme editor opens with the “Gift options” embed switched on; click Save. It appears above the checkout button in your cart drawer and on the cart page. To place it yourself on the cart page, use Add the cart page block instead (or as well: the cart page then uses the block, the drawer uses the embed).
  3. Gift options page: switch the gift message on or off and set its length limit (20–500 characters).
  4. Gift wrap (Pro): switch it on, add options with a name, price and image, and save. The app creates the gift wrap product in your store.
  5. Texts (checkbox, labels, placeholder, "characters left") and the colour are in the embed's or block's settings in the theme editor.

How it works in the cart

  • Ticking This order is a gift saves the cart attribute Gift: Yes; the message is saved as Gift message (plain text, line breaks kept, control characters removed). Unticking removes both, and the gift wrap.
  • Choosing a gift wrap adds one unit of that wrap to the cart and saves Gift wrap: name. Gift wrap is once per order. If the quantity is changed or a second wrap is added, the cart is put back to one; if the last giftable item is removed, the wrap is removed too.
  • Shopify copies cart attributes to the order: you see them on the order under Additional details. The gift wrap is a normal line item.
  • Checkout rule: checkout blocks a gift message over your limit, and gift wrap bought on its own, more than once, without “This order is a gift”, or after gift wrap was switched off. You can edit these messages on the Gift options page. Adding to the cart is never blocked.
  • Buy it now and other checkouts that skip the cart have no gift details (gift options are chosen in the cart).

The gift wrap product

  • One product (default name “Gift wrap”) with one variant per option. It's unlisted, so it isn't shown in collections (including “all products”), storefront search or recommendations; it's hidden from search engines (seo.hidden); inventory isn't tracked; it requires shipping (so it's packed with the order) and weighs nothing.
  • It's on your Online Store only while gift wrap is offered, and taken off when you switch gift wrap off or Pro ends.
  • The app manages its name, options, prices and images: edit them in the app. Tax: set “Charge tax on gift wrap” in the app.
  • Before uninstalling, delete it on the app's Gift wrap page (products stay in your store after an app is removed). If you already uninstalled, delete it in Shopify → Products.

Gift receipts (Pro)

  • Order page → Print → Gift receipt, or select up to 50 orders on the Orders page → Print → Gift receipt. The PDF opens in Shopify's print preview; one page per order.
  • It shows your store name, the title you choose, the order number and date, the items with quantities (and variants if you like), the gift message and your note. Never prices, totals, payment or customer details; the gift wrap item isn't listed.
  • Gift receipts need Shopify's approval of the app's access to order data. Until then the print dialog explains what's missing.

Gift message on Shopify's packing slip (optional)

The gift wrap line prints on packing slips automatically. To print the gift message too, add this to your packing slip template: Shopify admin → Settings → Shipping and delivery → Packing slips → Edit, paste it where you want it (for example below the line items), then Preview with a gift order and save. The app never changes your templates.

If the preview shows nothing for a gift order, your packing slip template doesn't have access to cart attributes; the gift details are always on the order under Additional details, and on the gift receipt.

Troubleshooting

  • Gift options don't appear: check the Gift options app embed is on (theme editor → App embeds) and saved. They show only when the cart has a giftable item (see Product rules). On themes with unusual carts, set “Place before (CSS selector)” in the embed settings, e.g. .cart__ctas, or add the Gift options block to your cart page.
  • No gift wrap in the cart: gift wrap needs Pro, at least one option switched on, and a saved Gift wrap page without errors. The home page shows its status.
  • Checkout says the gift message is too long: the message was changed outside the cart. Shorten it in the cart and check out again.
